Why tackling poverty means investing in women and girls
For sustainable development to be effective, the work of empowering women must be front and centre, says Dr Mansur Muhtar
The international development community has long accepted that gender equity must be at the heart of efforts to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the set of 17 targets and indicators drawn up as a blueprint for UN members to reach by 2030. Although the fifth of the 17 SDGs is to “achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls”, it is widely understood that women’s empowerment is integral to all of them.
